22 May Building Hope
My flight left before the sun rose this morning. By the time most of you read this, I will have woken up, driven to the airport, taken two flights and hopped on a bus heading to a work site in Mexico.
Go ahead and take a sip of coffee to catch up. I know I’ve had plenty.
If you missed my post on the Hope Sports Build, you can read about it and the sweet family we’re building a house for here.
I’ve been wound up and excited about this trip for a while now, and I can’t even wrap my head around what I’m most excited about.
Never having been on a trip like this before, I’m eager to see, learn, and experience the whole process. I also feel really connected to the mother even though I’ve never met her. Maybe it’s just a mom thing, that we’re close in age and a few of our kids are close in age. Regardless, she has been firmly placed on my heart and is front and center in my prayer life at the moment.
This weekend 17 Olympians (including myself) we will building a house for the Diaz Gomez family.
But I’m also going to relish my time around 16 other Olympians. There is nothing quite like being around a group of highly motivated, super intense and absolutely courageous people, which is pretty much every Olympian I’ve ever met. They all have a unique story in and out of the arena, and they’re stories encourage me and fire me up every time I hear them.
In fact, these athletes and their stories are so inspiring, I’ve started a whole new section of my website to bring you that same inspiration. I’ve been interviewing incredible athletes and I’m posting those interviews to bring you hope and encouragement as well. I’ve also started writing related articles to help you along in your journey. Whether you are an athlete or want to become your best in another arena, this is for you.

So to have the opportunity to be around 16 other Olympians from all different sports (diving, table tennis, cycling, speedskating, track & field, rowing, bobsled, curling, volleyball, swimming and the winners of Amazing Race 2014) for an entire weekend, well, I’m going to do my best to soak up every ounce of it and learn from as many of them as I possibly can!
And to top it off, these aren’t just Olympians and Olympic medalists. They are also people who have chosen to serve others. They are choosing to put their own lives and families aside and come do something out of their comfort zone for people they don’t even know. Yes, these are my people for sure.
I painted a little housewarming gift for the family.
We are allowed to bring a few gifts for the family but they have to fit into our personal bags. I have a lot of little girl clothes, so that is an easy one for me to bring. I picked up some supplies for the kids- balloons, pencils, crayons and notepads. But that mama was still heavy on my heart. I know blessing her kids will bless her, but I wanted to do something that she might enjoy, too. So I made her and her husband a little house warming gift.
They are Christians so I thought they would enjoy hanging this verse in their new house.
“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
It will be a couple of long, hardworking days in the company of some amazing people to bless a precious, big-dreaming family. What a way to spend a weekend!
Don’t worry- I’ll be taking lots of pictures and videos. I’m sure I will have a ton of great stories to bring back to you! If you would like to be a part of the blessing for the Diaz Gomez family, please consider donating on this page that two of the swimmers on the trip set up:
If you aren’t able to donate, you would consider at least sharing their donation page or this one? When we all play a little part, big things happen. Thank you for lifting up this family with us!
